Newark Natural Foods in New Castle County, Delaware, carries an array of whole and organically grown food products and buys from local growers whenever possible.
What began as a group of moms and some other folks looking for more natural foods has blossomed into a bustling and growing enterprise.
Newark Natural Foods, operated by the Newark Community Cooperative Inc., traces its roots to a club started in 1967 so that members could purchase unrefined and organically grown food.
The concept gained ground, and by 1975, the club incorporated and furthered its mission of providing quality food to members at not-for-profit prices.
Today, co-op numbers 3,000 households and 9,400 members and, organizers say, continues to draw interest from people who want to provide an alternative to highly processed food for their families and lessen their impact on the environment.
The co-op’s 2,800-square-foot store sells free-range meat and eggs and carries an array of whole foods, including organically grown grains, nuts, seeds, herbs, fresh fruits and vegetables.
The store, at 280 E. Main St. in Newark, Del., carries items for people with a range of dietary needs including, vegetarian, vegan, macrobiotic, wheat and gluten free, low sodium and high fiber. The store also stocks vitamins, supplements, natural body care products, pet products, and other environmentally responsible household items.
Organizers say they buy from local farmers and suppliers whenever possible to keep costs down and support local growers and businesses.
Though the store is a member-owned cooperative run by an elected board, it is open to the public and membership is not required to shop there. Members receive a 2 percent discount on all items and can earn a 7 percent discount by volunteering to work at the store or participate in other co-op activities. Membership for households is a one-time $100 fee. Other membership rates are available for students and seniors.
The co-op also operates a farmers market in the front parking lot of its store from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday in spring, summer and fall. The market features fresh produce, flowers and other products from local growers.
Newark Natural Foods is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
