Da Vinci Comes to St. Francis Hospital
Published Apr 16, 2008
In place of a scalpel, many surgeons at St. Francis Hospital are holding the controls of a robotic platform when they operate on urological, gynecological and cardiothoracic patients.
Known for its strong investments in infrastructure and technology, St. Francis operates the first – and currently the only – da Vinci Surgical System in Delaware.
The da Vinci system enables surgeons to perform even complex and delicate procedures through small incisions with precision. Patients may experience less pain, blood loss and scarring while enjoying a faster return to normal activities as well as the potential for better clinical outcomes.
Since the system’s installation in October 2006, more than 100 patients have benefited from it.
Patients who turn to St. Francis Hospital for weight-loss surgery also are benefiting from advances in medical care. In 2007, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery named St. Francis a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. The surgeons, from the Christiana Institute of Advanced Surgery, have vast experience with the procedure.
“Obesity and the associated health risks are increasing concerns in today’s society. With its bariatric surgery program, St. Francis Hospital has identified an opportunity to help improve the health of this patient population,” says Clarence R. LaLiberty Jr., president and chief executive officer of St. Francis Healthcare Services. “Achieving the Center of Excellence designation demonstrates our commitment to providing the highest quality, safest care to our patients.”
Also noteworthy, the St. Francis Foundation has completed a $17 million capital campaign that financed one of the most advanced heart centers in the region, a renovated and expanded emergency department, and upgrades throughout the hospital.
Established in 1924, St. Francis Hospital in downtown Wilmington provides more than $9 million in free health-care services each year to thousands of uninsured people.
