Pediatric Hospital Lauded as One of Nation’s Best
Published Apr 16, 2008

At Wilmington’s Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, renowned specialists from around the world treat children, not just their conditions. That commitment was recognized by Child Magazine, which included the hospital in a recent ranking of the best children’s hospitals in the nation.

The hospital has brought hope to thousands of children from across the country and around the world for nearly 70 years.

The numbers tell the story.

In 2006, the 200-bed, not-for-profit hospital recorded 10,800 admissions with an average stay of four and one-half days. There were approximately 301,000 physician visits, 45,000 new patients, 10,850 surgical procedures, 5,000 emergency room visits and 1,390 instances in which critical-care patients were transported by the Pediatric Transport Team.

The hospital’s programs in cardiology, neonatology, oncology, orthopedics and solid organ transplants are internationally recognized.

Since the hospital opened in 1940, a statement from benefactor Alfred I. duPont has summarized its mission: “It has been my firm conviction throughout life that it is the duty of everyone in the world to do what is within his power to alleviate human suffering.”

Putting those words into action, duPont Hospital for Children offers all the specialties of pediatric medicine, surgery and dentistry on a park-like, 300-acre campus that provides children and their families a tranquil place for treatment and healing.

“Our focus remains on providing safe, efficient and family-centered patient care of the highest quality,” says spokesman Jim Lardear.

The hospital is a division of Jacksonville, Fla.-based Nemours, one of the nation’s largest systems devoted to pediatric care.

Extending the hospital’s local presence, the Nemours Children’s Clinic-Delaware Valley provides physician services at the hospital’s main campus and at primary and specialty locations throughout Delaware, southern New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania.
