Water Enthusiasts Flow to New Castle County
Published Apr 16, 2006

Rowing the Christina River is one of the ways to enjoy the water.

From the Christina River, Brandywine River, Delaware River and Delaware Bay to the nearby Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, New Castle County is a water lover’s paradise.

Recreation, nature and history along the water are abundant, providing residents and visitors with plenty to enjoy – and learn about.

“We have a major maritime heritage that goes back to the 1600s, when the Finns, Dutch, Swedes and Germans came here,” says J. Harry Feldman, executive director of the Greater Wilmington Convention & Visitors Bureau. “That maritime heritage is very important, and even today, we are a major port.”

Those who want to get into the water can grab a tube, kayak or canoe and experience the beauty of the Brandywine River, take a rowing scull on the Christina or head to the Delaware seashore resort towns of Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach – a short drive from anywhere in New Castle County.

And nature enthusiasts who want to stay ashore can take advantage of the Russell W. Peterson Wildlife Refuge adjacent to Riverfront Wilmington.
